Victorians dominate 2015 Perth Cup and Galaxy finals

VICTORIANS dominated in the west on Saturday night, taking out the two features at Cannington, the Perth Cup (530m) and the Galaxy (715m).

The Galaxy was the first to jump, with the -trained Space Star starting a dominant favourite from box seven.

The striking black son of and began well, following the pacemaker Starc (box six) over to the fence in the early stages before assuming the lead in the run to the line on the first occasion.

Despite finding the front early, it was not an easy assignment for Space Star as mad railer Lady Toy (box one) pushed up underneath him down the back, laying down a stern challenge.

The two chasers were level coming off the back and continued to eyeball each other into the home straight, with Space Star having to dig deep, but eventually striding clear to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths in a fast 41.63.

Lady Toy held on for second with Starc filling the trifecta.

Space Star has now won 18 races from 29 starts including another tenacious victory in last month's 2 at Wentworth Park. He is yet to miss a place since joining Britton's kennel last November, winning seven of 10 starts for the leading conditioner.

Three races later and it was time for the sprinters to have their crack at the elite level, with eight superb canines doing battle in the Perth Cup.

Star started the $2.10 favourite from box one, ahead of the exhilarating My Bro Fabio (box eight) and local boom pup Astronomize (box two).

When the lids flew open it was Downlight (box six) and Star Recall vying for the lead, with the former managing to cross to the fence around the first turn with Star Recall stepping off and finding trouble, putting herself out of play.

Down the back and Whodat Knockin' (box three) railed underneath Downlight to assume the lead, but all eyes soon became fixed on the big-striding My Bro Fabio, which circled the field and was quickly closing in on the lamplighter.

Around the home turn, the -trained son of and Flamenco loomed up beside the leader, thundering past him in the straight to win by a length in 30.34.

Whodat Knockin' finished second with Quartz Bale (box four) third.

Star Recall chased her little heart out to grab fourth.

My Bro Fabio has now won 24 of his 47 starts with more than $369,00 in prizemoney earnings.

Both Group 1 victors are expected to head to The Meadows on February 21 for the night. Space Star has been invited to take his place in both the Rookie Rebel (600m) and the Zoom Top (725m) while My Bro Fabio has been invited to the Temlee (525m) and the Rookie Rebel (600m) respectively.
