WA Greyhound Trainer Disqualified For 3 Years Over Animal Welfare Issues

WA yesterday concluded an into the condition of greyhounds kennelled at the premises of Mr Michael McManus and Mrs Brenda McManus as found on the 6th June 2012.

Evidence was heard from Owner/Trainer Mr Michael McManus, his mother, Owner Mrs Brenda McManus, Racing Industry Veterinarian Dr Judith Medd and Senior Mr Paul Searle.

Owner/Trainer Mr M. McManus pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 106 (2), for failing to exercise reasonable care and supervision of greyhounds under his care.

Mr M. McManus was disqualified for a period of 3 years, effective forthwith.

Mrs B. McManus also pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 106 (2) for failing to exercise reasonable care and supervision of greyhounds under her care.

Mrs B. McManus was disqualified for a period of six months, effective forthwith.

In consideration of the penalties, the Stewards took the following into account; The acknowledgment of the offence. The serious nature of the offence. The circumstances surrounding the offence. Their remorse and personal circumstances. Their level of responsibility.

RWWA Stewards, Veterinarian and representatives of the GreyhoundsWA Program (GAP) have attended the McManus property on several occasions prior to the inquiry to ensure the health and welfare of the greyhounds and to provide advice and assistance, with several greyhounds relocated to other properties or into the GAP program.
