Awareness Message -Bunyip Ridge Fire 7am
Awareness Message – Nayook sector-between McIntyre and Elton Roads
The Bunyip Ridge fire is burning in the Bunyip State Park and State Forest areas between Gembrook, Powelltown, Neerim Junction and Tonimbuk and is estimated to be approximately 25,000 hectares in size.
Successful back burning operations over Saturday night continued in the Nayook sector, specifically between McIntyre and Elton Roads. Residents in the area are advised they will continue to experience smoke as a result of these operations, and there may also be visible flame activity. Due to certain weather conditions, the smoke from these burns may settle closer to the ground.
Even though the Bunyip Ridge fire is not currently posing a threat, residents in these areas need to be aware that with fire activity continuing, there is the potential for it to impact directly.
There may be increased amounts of smoke in the area from this fire.
Road users are advised to take extra care as road travel may be hazardous due to low visibility from smoke.
Even though this fire does not currently pose a threat, people in high risk bushfire areas are reminded to have a bushfire survival plan ready to implement during the summer period.
Continue to listen to ABC or local radio for updates on this fire.
The public are asked not to unnecessarily travel into areas where back burning operations are continuing due to the number of emergency service vehicles operating there.
