Napthine Claims Victorian Greyhound Racing Is Powering Ahead

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine has congratulated Greyhound Racing Victoria () on its success as the organisation reports strong wagering turnover, a major increase in prize money and the upgrade of tracks and facilities over the past financial year.

Upon the tabling of GRV’s 2010/2011 Annual Report in State Parliament today, Dr Napthine said the Victorian Coalition Government was a staunch supporter of Greyhound Racing and it was great to see the sport thriving.

“Over the 2010-2011 financial year, Greyhound Racing Victoria had a very strong wagering turnover resulting in a market share of nearly 20 per cent, which is up from 9 per cent in 1994,†Dr Napthine said.

Greyhounds As Pets Program Launched At Dillwynia Correctional Centre

Corrective Services Minister Phil Costa today launched a program for female prison inmates to retrain and socialise ex-racing greyhounds, preparing the dogs to become loved family pets.

The program is a joint venture with Greyhound Racing NSW () that will provide a new program opportunity for female inmates and improve in the greyhound industry.

Up to six dogs at any one time will be cared for at kennels within the women’s Dillwynia Correctional Centre at Windsor.

Greyhounds Go To Tarrengower Prison

Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing has launched Victoria’s second program to help retrain retired greyhounds at Tarrengower Prison, Maldon.

Mr Hulls said the award-winning program, already in place at in Murchison, had been highly successful in rehabilitating dogs and providing prisoners with an opportunity to get involved in a positive activity.

“Greyhounds are strong, energetic and athletic animals as racing dogs, but once their competitive career is over they need to be trained to adjust to their new environment so they can live out the rest of their lives as household pets,†Mr Hulls said.
