Amity Bale was named the 2009 Sandown Greyhound of the Year at Sandown Park tonight.
Trained by Graeme Bate for leviathan owner/breeder Paul Wheeler, the black Sonic Flight – Evonne Bale bitch joined an elite group of greyhounds to win over both Sandown Park distances, and became just the second greyhound after Mantra Lad to break 30 seconds for the sprint, and 42 seconds over the ‘half-mile’.
She had nine starts over the sprint trip in 2009 for two wins (29.89, 29.98) and four minor placings, but it was over the distance that she established herself as one of the nation’s best stayers.

Just days after being named AGRA Greyhound Of The Month for November, Amity Bale has broken down hopelessly and will be retired.
Racing last night in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup at The Gardens, Australia’s top ranked stayer was always struggling and fell back sharply at the point of the home corner, dropping out quickly.
Subsequent veterinary inspection revealed a fractured hock for the Graeme Bate trained staying star.

Australian Racing Greyhound can reveal that Dyna Forte, the winner of the $22,000 to the winner Group 3 2009 SA Derby; has returned a swab irregularity on preliminary testing of a swab sample taken from the night of the Derby win.
Dyna Forte is trained by leading Victorian greyhound trainer Graeme Bate who has been enjoying a spectacular run of feature race successes and track records in recent weeks. In fact the night Dyna Forte won the SA Derby, Bate was in Victoria watching Amity Bale win the Group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown. Dyna Forte was sent to South Australia in the care of Bate’s kennel foreman, Rob Camilleri.
As a matter of routine practice the first three placegetters of the SA Derby were all subjected to urinary swab analysis and a GRSA spokesperson has confirmed that both second placegetter Beer Time trained by Shaun Matcott and third placed Dentax Bale, also trained by Bate; have returned negative swabs.

Amity Bale clinched her third consecutive Group race title with a stunning win in the $36,000 Group 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown Park tonight.
Clearly the best stayer currently racing, Amity Bale was sent to the boxes a $1.40F on SuperTAB but was as much as $1.80 on course.
However it was kennelmate Jarvis Bale ($15.60) who made the best of the start, jumping well with Headley Bale (18.90) and Drill ‘Em ($5.30) to lead through the first turn. Amity Bale trailed the leaders past the winning post the first time and the order remained unchanged entering the back straight.
