Oaks Road Named Australia’s Best Greyhound In January 2012
AGRA’s Greyhound of the Month for January 2012 is brilliant New South Wales sprinter Oaks Road. In January the talented Oaks Road was undefeated winning his four starts including the Group 2 Bob Payne Summer Sprint at Wentworth Park.
It was a remarkable month for the hard chasing Spiral Nikita dog trained by Mark Gatt for Ed Kingswell. He has always shown he was a serious greyhound after racing in top company from early on in his career. However perhaps 2012, his connections may enjoy what they know their star sprinter is capable off.
Oaks Road started the month winning the Gosford Cup Consolation in outstanding fashion recording the fastest time of the night of 29.79, Fancy Dean was second. He then went to Wentworth Park for his heat of the Bob Payne and again returned the best time of the night 29.64.

Betchoice Gardens Becomes the Centre of Attention
It’s that time of year again when the weather isn’t the only thing that heats up the Hunter Valleys premier track Betchoice Gardens. The time honoured Group One National Derby for the male greyhounds and the National Futurity for the female greyhounds sees not only New South Wales but Australian starts flocking to the track this Friday afternoon for the three week series which will see the two winners take home the $75,000 first prize.
Early favourite to take out the Futurity final is the Beau Hedley trained Avondale Queen. Despite having only five starts the extremely impressive daughter of Trewly Special and Golorinda, has already notched up four exceptional victories. With ability coursing through her veins, her bloodlines are no strangers to success with the likes of; Domino Vitali (former Bulli track record holder), Shy Flyer (2011 Futurity Finalist) and Micro Benny (Multiple Group One finalist in New Zealand) all successful offspring. After beginning her career early in December at Maitland, she stepped up to the tough 450m and clocked a near record 25.06. Even though she tasted defeat for the first time last week, Beau still maintains her best races and times are still too come.
‘I wasn’t surprised at all when she ran that time. We trialled her a week prior to her first start and she nearly broke the record. On her day I think she could’
Despite her dominance of the one turn track, Hedley remains confident her true ability is shown around the two turn circuits.

Big Win For Bunga In NSWNCA St Leger At Betchoice Gardens
The Jason Mackay trained Big Bunga took advantage of a glorious rails run on the first turn to take out the Group Three Woy Woy Poultry St Leger at Betchoice Gardens last night.
Big Bunga ($8.70) only began fairly, but was a clear leader through the catching pen the first time when Bralyn Midge ran off at the first turn, taking Group One winner Isadoll with him and presenting Big Bunga with a saloon passage.
He held his advantage to score in a career best time of 29.62, three lengths in advance of the ever consistent No Doubt ($23.30), who came from last, with race favourite Chevez ($3.60) a further three quarters of a length away in third.

Chevez The One To Beat In The St Leger Final At Betchoice Gardens
Champion Queensland trainer Tony Brett will have a busy 24 hours in NSW when he lines up Chevez in tonight’s Woy Woy Poultry St Leger at Betchoice Gardens and will then have Ripped Jeans contest the Country Winnebago Auction Series Final at Dapto one night later
Chevez improved dramatically from his first look at the track last Friday, where he was relegated to third place behind No Doubt, to sizzle around the 515 metres in 29.58 and set the time standard for tonight’s final in wet and windy conditions.
Brett was over the moon with the performance of the son of Hallucinate and Drunken Treasure and was even happier after drawing box eight in the $15,000 to the winner Group Three Final.
“It was a great run†said Brett after the race

He’s No Silly Billy And The Summer Cup Is Within His Grasp
He has beaten the best and now he must face the best once again in his biggest staying test to date. Billy Bobaggings has somewhat progressed his staying career under the radar until last week he produced a mighty come from behind effort to blow away multiple distance group winner Blue Lorian by almost six lengths in a time of 42.69 over the 720 metre distance.
After not much attention from punters, the black and white dog was forced wide twice in his bid to secure the lead. He had to work but eventually got his way when he took the lead from Beware at the top of the home turn. Once in full stride he extended his lead in running a strong 16.96 run home time securing box four in the Group Two Wentworth Park Summer Cup to be held tomorrow night.
With highly credible statistics of eleven wins and eleven minor placings from twenty seven starts, punters can be forgiven for overlooking the $11.40 opening price as the calibre of greyhounds included in the field such as; Blue Lorian, Nana Cook and Sand Burner was worthy enough of a group race final.

The son of Hallucinate and Drunken Treasure improved dramatically from his first look at the track last Friday, where he led, but was run down and relegated to third place, to sizzle around the 515 metres in 29.58 in wet and windy conditions.
Brett was over the moon with his performance and was hoping for a wide draw in the final, with his wish being granted when Chevez drew box eight in the $15,000 to the winner Group Three.

Smooth Fancy – One Door Closes And Another Opens
He has clocked one of the fastest runs of all time at Wentworth Park and his come from behind victory in Adelaide to claim the 2010 National Sprint Championship made him a star but now his impact will be made in the breeding barn when Smooth Fancy was retired this week due to a fractured stopper bone injury. The retirement has many of his supporters saddened however another door opens with an amazing opportunity to continue the legacy of the extraordinary chaser through his future progeny.
It all began in July of 2009 when Smooth Fancy and trainer Dennis Barnes stepped out at the immortal Grafton track in New South Wales for a maiden race over the 407 metres and disappointment would be the only word to describe the result with the black dog coming 5th beaten by over 8 lengths.
From then followed a start at Coonamble over the 530 metres for another 5th placing and it wasn’t until his third start over the 520 metres at Bathurst from box seven where he made his break through recording a time of 30.48 and familiarly making his way through the field to win by two lengths after a slow start.

El Grand Senor’s Second Sectional Record Set up 2010 Topgun Win
The Carolyn Jones-owned and trained El Grand Senor ($5.20) demoralised his rivals in a dazzling display of speed to take out the Group 1 Sky Racing TOPGUN at The Meadows over 525 metres on Saturday night.
The son of Where’s Pedro and Elgrando Gold was not hindered by his box four draw, spearing to an early lead after a sensational 5.03 split with a lap to run. With rivals finding trouble on the first corner, El Grand Senor opened up a race-winning lead down the back, stopping the clock at an amazing 17.48 at the next split – shaving .04 off his own previous second sectional track record.
Enjoying a massive lead turning for home, the giant 39-kilogram chaser raced away with his second Group 1 win at The Meadows (he was victorious in the Hudson Pacific Maturity in July), stopping the clock at 29.83, ahead of the impressive Enry Walt (box seven), who ran on extremely well to grab second.

2010 Topgun Hopefuls On Target
Connections of the two Hunter Valley contenders of the Sky Racing Topgun, Lochinvar Marlow and Snozz, are happy leading into the Group One after overcoming setbacks in the lead up to Saturday’s invitation only event worth $100,000 to the winner at The Meadows in Melbourne.
Paws Of Thunder winner, Lochinvar Marlow trialled in probably the worst conditions possible at The Meadows last week when Melbourne was in the grip of cyclonic weather. On top of the slow track, the last start Group One winner bombed the start, running a pedestrian 5.27 to the first mark. He recovered down back, running 18.17 for the second split, before finishing off with a closing section 12.22, giving him an overall time of 30.39.
Kevin Gordon, father of Lochinvar Marlow’s owner Clare Gordon, handled Lochinvar Marlow in his only hit-out in preparation for the $100,000 to the winner event and was delighted under the circumstances and the way he came through his first assignment in Melbourne.

In an open final, worth $35,000 to the winner, veteran chaser Snozz will more than likely be the punter’s elect at jump time. Trained by champion Hunter Valley mentor Jason MacKay, Snozz was the fastest qualifier, running 29.51 in last week’s heat.
“He’s rising four years of age and it would probably be quicker to go through the injuries he hasn’t had rather than list the injuries he has had, but at the moment he is going the best he has ever gone†said MacKay.
