2015 Group 1 Hobart Thousand – free tips and best bookie odds

THE 80th edition of the Group 1 (461 metres) will be contested this Thursday night and has attracted a quality field, filled with talent coming from north of the Bass Straight.

Victorian Star Dyna Double One is the $2.30 favourite with William Hill to take out Australia's oldest feature race following his slick 25.96 heat victory last Thursday.

Despite having his first look at the track, the son of Barcia Bale and Crystin Bale handled himself professionally, defeating local chaser Knox And Rattles (2nd reserve) by two-and-a-half lengths on the line.

The -trained powerhouse will start from box seven in the $75,000 feature where he will be chasing his sixth straight success following some stunning recent wins, including triumphs in two Group 1 events – the Melbourne and Brisbane Cups.

Aiming to stop Dyna Double One is defending champ Above All, which secured his spot in the final courtesy of a gutsy 26.03 win in his heat. The injury plagued chaser, trained by Rob Britton, will have to contend with box six in the final, a draw from which he has won two of five starts.

Britton also prepares Bearville Azza, which recorded the fastest heat time last week when clocking 25.89 from box six. The former Tassie sprinter moves into box three for the final and will be aiming to extend his unbeaten record over the track and trip, with five wins from as many appearances.

Team Bravo have been on fire in 2015 and they will be looking to end the year on a high with set to exit box two. The brindle and white dog is unbeaten from the inside two boxes and managed to clock an impressive 25.95 at his first look at the track in his heat.

The best of the local brigade appears to be Tecoma Emily off the coveted rails draw. The daughter of and Baretta Bee caused an upset when winning her qualifier last Thursday, but must be respected with an outstanding 25.76 personal best to her name.

Prescribe has returned to form in recent weeks and was only narrowly defeated by track record holder Above All in his heat, while roughies Long View Belle (box four) and See Blue's Girl (box five) round out the field.

The Group 1 Hobart Thousand is race eight on the card and will jump at 9:39pm AEDT.

Australian Racing Greyhound has detailed the form of each finalist below, with comments and tips by our resident tipster, Brad Bugeja.

“Exciting local talent and she has won here in near record time previously. Last week she was able to overcome a difficult draw and she was very strong in the run to the line when posting an impressive 26.10 heat win. This week is obviously a lot more difficult but if she does everything right from the red she should be able to hold the early lead and make an impact. I don't think she can win the event but she can definitely feature in the minor money.”

“He has really gone to the next level in recent months and he is beginning a lot better these days. I would have preferred him from a wider draw but if he gets the breaks early in the event he should put himself right in the mix. He is currently second pick in the market and although he is racing well and right up to winning this, I think he is well under the odds. There is quite a bit of speed draw around him, so if he half misses it, he is likely to get spat out the back in the initial stages.”

Box Three – Bearville Azza
Black Dog – 32.3kg – May 2013
Lochinvar Marlow x Von's Angel
Prize money: $53,630
Trainer: Rob Britton
Career: 32: 15-4-3
From box: 5 starts: 2 wins, 1 placing
T/D: 5: 5-0-0
T/D Best: 25.89
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Group 1 Melbourne Cup

“Bearville Azza began his career in this state but since switching to the mainland, he has turned into a star chaser. Two starts back he finished fourth behind Dyna Double One in the Melbourne Cup final and he didn't experience a lot of luck in running in that race. If he comes out running, he should be able to cross and lead and I think the favourite will have a hard time reeling him in, however his box manners can be a little unreliable at times and he can't afford to make too many mistakes. Despite the draw, he is still in my top three.”

T/D: 10: 3-5-2
T/D Best: 26.09
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Young Star Classic (Hobart), 2015 Tassie Gold Cup

“Inexperienced chaser and she is facing her toughest test to date. Last week she was far from disgraced when placed behind Bearville Azza and a repeat of that effort could see her sneak into a place. The draw is a big disadvantage though and I think she will likely find bother in the run to the first bend, so I can't see her making an impact.”

Box Five – See Blue's Girl
Black Bitch – 27.8kg – October 2013
Magic Sprite x See Blue
Prize money: $16,080
Trainer: Patrick Ryan
Career: 17: 10-3-1

T/D: 8: 4-2-0
T/D Best: 25.97
Career Highlights: WON Devonport 25.14, Launceston 29.70, Hobart 26.20

“Explosive beginner and she has won 10 of her 17 starts to date in fine style. Last week she was steady to begin but she soon exploded and she was able to find the front once they balanced up. This is clearly a big rise in class for her and she will need everything to go her way in running, from the awkward draw she is going to have trouble getting across and therefore I'm not too keen on her chances. Great effort to qualify and she will be a major player in the future in all Tasmanian feature races.”

Box Six – Above All
Black Dog – 31.9kg – July 2012
Magic Sprite x Kara Janx
Prize money: $227,190
Trainer: Rob Britton
Career: 24: 12-4-2
From box: 5 starts: 2 wins, 1 placing
T/D: 3: 3-0-0
T/D Best: 25.52TR
Career Highlights: WON 2014 Group 1 Hobart Thousand, 2015 Group 1 Silver Chief Classic, FINALIST 2014 Group 1 Melbourne Cup, 2015 Group 1

“All class and he won this race last year in track record time, since that time he has experienced a lot of injuries and he has found it hard to get back to his best. Two weeks ago he trialled around this track and trip in a sizzling 25.85 and he followed that effort up with a strong 26.03 heat win. The time was a little disappointing here last week but he will continue to improve with every run, so if he can step on terms he might be able to explode to the early lead and he will take some catching. He is currently around the $7.50 mark and I think that is great value for a chaser of his calibre.”

Barcia Bale x Crystin Bale
Prize money: $804,971

“Absolute superstar and he is likely to be the next chaser to crack the one million dollar mark. After winning the Melbourne Cup and Brisbane Cups, he had no trouble adapting to the Hobart track when posting a slick 25.94 heat win. You could see he got a little lost through the corners and it is clear that he will have derived a lot of benefit from that run. He races best when he can get out into some open space and with a slow beginner on his outside, he should be afforded all the breaks in the run to the first turn. I've put him in for second but if he does get a clear run he should be winning at the short quote.”

Box Eight – Prescribe
Black Dog – 31.9kg – March 2013
St. Pierre x Wongawilli Wala
Prize money: $40,374

T/D: 19: 5-6-4
T/D Best: 25.91
Career Highlights: 3RD 2015 Group 3 Devonport Cup, 2015 Tassie Gold Cup

“Has always shown enormous talent but for a while there he was racing in steady fashion. In the past three weeks he has regained his best and he has scored some eye popping wins. Last week he gave Above All a big head start and he took a heap of ground off him in the run home before going down narrowly. The wide draw should probably suit him as it should allow him to stay out there and out of trouble. He probably can't win but he is powerful and he could run home into some minor money.”

“This chaser could have been absolutely anything had he not been plagued by injuries throughout his career. Since returning from a spell he has recorded one sizzling Warrnambool win and three brilliant placings all over similar distances. If he happened to gain a start he would be one of the favourites and he would be a serious contender.”

“Handy local chaser who ran the race of his life when placed here last week. He has been racing in very consistent style since early October, however this is an enormous rise in class for him and I can't see him making an impact if he gains a start.”
