2015 Group 1 Melbourne Cup heats – every runners chances analysed

ALL eyes will be on Sandown Park this Friday night with eight heats of Australia's richest greyhound race, the $600,000 Melbourne Cup.

The series is set to be the swan song for champion sprinter Fernando Bale which will be aiming to seize his ninth Group 1 title for leading Victorian trainer Andrea Dailly. The white and dark brindle son of Kelsos Fusileer and Chloe Allen is the $1.65 favourite with Bet365 to take out the final on November 20, with a win in the event set to see him retire with an unprecedented $1,588,110 in career earnings.

Team Dailly look set for a massive night this Friday, with a total of 17 runners engaged across the eight heats, their other main chance being Dyna Double One, $8, which comes into the series following a narrow second in last week's Shootout over the track and trip.

Other key runners to watch out for in the series include Billo's Pick ($26), Secret Spell ($26) and Brad Hill Billy ($34).

The winner of each heat will progress through to next Friday's final which carries a whopping $420,000 winner's cheque.

Below is an analysis of each runner in the series, with expert comments from Australian Racing Greyhound‘s tipster Brad Bugeja.

Group 1 Melbourne Cup – heat one (7:08pm)

Box One – Black Illusion
Black Dog – 34.3kg – January 2013
Collide x My Secret Shiraz
Prize money: $79,520
Trainer: Angela Langton
Career: 65: 19-9-6
From box: 6: 5-0-0
T/D: 26: 5-4-5
T/D Best: 29.65
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Group 1 Maturity Classic, 2015 Group 2 Geelong Cup

“Armed with great early speed and from the red draw he should just about hold them out at the first turn, however there are some strong types in this event so he is likely to get reeled in. Can give a great sight in his heat but can't see him advancing and making an impact in the series.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $67 with Bet365

Box Two – Ebert Bale
Red Brindle Dog – 31.8kg – October 2013
Taylors Sky x
Prize money: $19,070
Trainer: Andrea Dailly
Career: 29: 6-4-5
From box: 6: 3-1-1
T/D: 8: 1-1-2
T/D Best: 29.77
Career Highlights: WON Sandown Park 29.77, 30.03, Warrnambool 25.57

“Genuine chance in this heat and if given a clear run he is capable of going with most chasers, however his lack of early speed is a big disadvantage and if he makes the final he can't afford to give some of the big guns too big of a head start. Can clearly make the final but won't be a factor in the big one.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $201 with Bet365

Box Three – Benzo Bale
Black Dog – 33.8kg – October 2012
Collide x Hafren Bale
Prize money: $36,592
Trainer: Andrea Dailly
Career: 67: 12-12-7
From box: 10: 1-5-1
T/D: 15: 2-4-2
T/D Best: 29.50
Career Highlights: WON The Meadows 30.32, Sandown Park 29.50, 25.60, Bendigo 23.86

“Has been racing in great style of late and his effort to win three runs back was eye catching. His record here is sound and he has a 29.50 PB and with a clear passage he could probably get down to the 29.40 mark. Can make an impact in the heat but I think he doesn't have what it takes to take out the final.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $201 with Bet365

Box Four – Margins
Black Dog – 37.2kg – February 2013
Bekim Bale x Gogo Sutro
Prize money: $125,575
Trainer: Brooke Ennis
Career: 38: 13-8-5
From box: 5: 1-0-0
T/D: 1-: 5-1-0
T/D Best: 29.30
Career Highlights: WON 2015 Group 2 Horsham Cup, 3RD 2015 Group 1 Maturiy Classic, FINALIST 2015 Group 1 National Sprint Championship

“All class and has the ability to lead or come from off the speed in his races. He has won five of 10 over this trip and he does have a victory over the great Fernando Bale here. The draw isn't great but I'm expecting him to get across and find the rail quite easily and he should balance up in the top four. He has a great turn of foot once he finds the inside and with a clear passage he should be winning this heat. If he makes it through, he would need an inside draw to make an impact in the final and there is no doubting that he has the ability to win a race of this calibre.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $21 with Bet365

Box Five – Above All
Black Dog – 32.2kg – July 2012
Magic Sprite x Kara Janx
Prize money: $221,605
Trainer: Rob Britton
Career: 21: 11-4-0
From box: 3: 3-0-0
T/D: 11: 4-3-0
T/D Best: 29.25
Career Highlights: WON 2014 Group 1 Hobart Thousand, 2015 Group 1 Silver Chief Classic, FINALIST 2014 Group 1 Melbourne Cup, 2015 Group 1

“Sparingly raced star and since making the final of this race last year he has experienced a lot of injuries. This is his first run for a few months but he is in good hands and I'm sure he wouldn't be running if he wasn't 100 %. Clearly if he is at his best he can play a major role in this series, however I am a little concerned about the speed drawn outside him in his heat. I think he is a big take on in his heat.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $26 with Bet365

Box Six – Wahlberg
Black Dog – 34.2kg – April 2013
Barcia Bale x Lizzy Banks
Prize money: $23,255
Trainer: Gary Shingles
Career: 23: 9-4-4

T/D: 4: 1-1-2
T/D Best: 29.55
Career Highlights: WON Richmond 22.82,The Meadows 30.00, 30.21

“Fast beginner and he has been racing well here in recent weeks, however he does race best when he can lead and dictate the terms and with the speed drawn in the red, I can't see that happening. Has early speed to be a nuisance to some of the more fancied runners but I can't see him figuring in the finish.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $126 with Bet365

Box Seven – Moreira
Brindle Dog – 31.2kg – September 2013
Kinloch Brae x Donna Riccca
Prize money: $28,905

T/D: 6: 1-3-2
T/D Best: 29.43
Career Highlights: WON The Meadows 29.87, Sandown Park 29.43

“Enormous talent who likes to use the middle of his track in his races but in this company I think he is better suited to a rails draw as that would help him hold a forward position. If guaranteed a clear run, he has the talent to win his heat and he also has the talent to cause a boil over in the final, however his lack of genuine early speed means that he always has to work hard in his races.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $41 with Bet365

Box Eight – Alpha Zeus
Brindle Dog – 30.4kg – March 2013
Collision x Queen of Cyprus
Prize money: $43,460

T/D: 14: 3-4-1
T/D Best: 29.58
Career Highlights: WON The Meadows 30.17, Sandown Park 29.58

“Returned to form with a strong Shepparton win on Monday and is suited to the wider draw, however he does tend to struggle in the closing stages over this distance and he does appear tested in this class. Can maybe run a place in his heat but that is about it.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $301 with Bet365

T/D: 7: 1-3-0
T/D Best: 30.50

“Has early speed and the rails draw should probably be an advantage, however she does tend to struggle in the closing stages over this distance and there are some very strong types in this race. Can maybe run a place in her heat but that is about it.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $126 with Bet365

Box Two – Absolute Power
Black Dog – 33.1kg – November 2013
Bekim Bale x Mepunga Nicky
Prize money: $45,485

T/D Best: 29.33
Career Highlights: WON Sandown Park 29.33, 29.37, 29.48, Cranbourne 29.94

“Blessed with enormous talent and if he put it all together he could just about go with any chaser in training, however he can bomb the start and he does make mistakes in running. The speed in one and three should be an advantage for him and he is a serious chance to win his heat. If he makes the final he would need to draw well and would need a lot of things to go his way.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $34 with Bet365

Box Three – Hard Bargain
Black Dog – 34.2kg – October 2013
Fabregas x Natural Sapphire
Prize money: $48,520

T/D: 2: 0-1-0
T/D Best: N/A
Career Highlights: 2ND 2015 Group 2 Great Chase, FINALIST 2015 Group 3 SA Derby

“Much improved chaser and has the speed to cross and lead this heat. Three starts back he broke the 30 second barrier at the Meadows when runner up and on the lure he can probably go around the 29.40 mark. That sort of run would be good enough to win this heat but he would need to shave a few lengths off that time to have any chance in the final.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $67 with Bet365

Box Four – Lektra Outlaw
Brindle Dog – 33.5kg – January 2013

T/D Best: 29.54
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Group 1 National Derby, 2015 Group 2 Traralgon Cup

“Much better than his recent form reads and he does race well over this track and trip. If he happened to ping away and find the top early, he would take some serious catching, however it's hard to get excited about some of his most recent efforts. Just not going well enough, so I can't see him making an impact in this series.”

Odds to win the Melbourne Cup final: $251 with Bet365

Box Five – Brad Hill Billy

Career Highlights: WON 2014 Group 2 Launceston Cup, 2015 Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint, 3RD 2015 Group 2 Shootout, FINALIST 2015 Group 1

“Big talent who once again hasn't faired too well by the box draw. Last week he actually stepped well before finding a little bit of bother in the shootout, he was far from disgraced when placed in that race and with a run under his belt around this circuit, he should have derived a lot of benefit. A major player in this heat and if he qualifies for the final and draws a rails alley, he could figure in the finish.”

“Hard chaser to follow at times but she loves this track and trip and the wide draw does help. She hasn't been beginning too well of late and that a big concern for me and with the speed on her outside I think she faces an uphill battle. Unlikely to make the final.”

“Very interesting chaser, he has always shown great potential but he always struggled when he came to town, however he has scored brilliant wins here and at The Meadows in recent weeks. On those occasions he has shown sizzling early speed and he has looked strong in the run to the line. Wide draw suits and if he makes it through he could maybe sneak a place in the final.”

If he happened to qualify he would have a tough time winning the final but would be a great story for connections if he happened to win. “Absolute superstar and deserves to win a big one. He is another who tends to save his best for The Meadows but he showed last week in the shootout that he can also handle this track and trip. If he can step on terms, he should be able to drive up behind the red in the early stages and if he balances up in the top three it should be a matter of times and margins. If he makes the final, he is clearly the main danger to Fernando and it would be great to see him draw well so he can test the champ.”

“Flying at present and the box draw probably isn't too bad as she has a keen railer drawn inside and a wide runner on her outside. Last week she was quite impressive when she was able to score coming from off the speed. I think she can threaten in this heat but she would need to find a little bit to score in the final.”

“Former NSW speedster who was a recent Geelong Cup finalist, his box manners aren't great but he does muster speed well and he runs a dazzling 420m, however he does stitch up in the closing stages. Has the speed to lead a race like this but even if he does I think he will be picked off in the closing stages.”

“Can show genuine early speed in his races and could cause an upset in this heat, last time out he exploded from the traps and posted brilliant sectionals when scoring at Geelong in 25.55. He has a great record over this track and trip and with his early speed he is always a chance in races like this. “Absolute champion who just continues to do everything right in his races. There isn't much that needs to be said about him. From the red he should fire to the early lead and score and if he does advance he is likely to go around at around $1.40 in the final and it's hard to see him being beaten.”

“Class act and his effort in the Silver Bullet was massive, from the two draw he should get a nice sit just behind the speed in the initial stages and he is extremely strong in the run home. There are quite a few front runners in this event, so there should be so bumping up front and that will play into his hands. I give him a serious chance of winning his heat and if he does he can definitely take home some minor money in the final.”

“Returned to his brilliant best here last week with a slick 29.43 win and with a trouble free run he should probably win this. He is blessed with enormous talent and if he happened to qualify he has the type of talent that is good enough to win the final, the only concern is that he can make a lot of mistakes in his races and he may get pushed wide at the first bend in his heat.”

“Front runner who rarely runs a bad race and he has a solid record here, however he tends to race best when drawn nearer the inside and he is going to face an uphill battle in this.”

“Well drawn in the red and she has the speed to hold them out early. Last time out she beat a handy lineup at the Meadows in 30.04 and she looked fairly strong in the run home, however this is another step up and she will need to pinch a nice break mid race. Her speed gives her a great chance of qualifying for the final but if she does she will need to go to another level to take out the big one.”

“Handy FFA chaser and he did catch the eye when scoring here in 29.40 two runs back, however on that occasion he did ping the lids and he was afforded an easy lead. Tonight he has a heap of speed drawn around him, so he isn't going to get things his own way. Will take a supreme effort to score and I can't see him winning.”

“Definitely no superstar but is as honest as they come and she has a habit of pinging the lids, I'm expecting her to come out running again and if she crosses the red early she can take home the prize. She doesn't have the talent to win the final but she should give a great sight in her heat.”

“Powerhouse chaser and if he avoids trouble at the first turn, he will take a power of beating. The big concern with him is that he appears to have lost all of his early dash, so now relies on a lot of luck in his races. No good thing from this draw but he is too good to dismiss. Would need to draw the red in the final to have any chance.”

“She is my value bet of the night, she has turned in some terrific efforts of late and from the wide draw she appears perfectly placed. There is no speed drawn around her and she should get every chance to settle in the top four, she is extremely strong in the run home and I think this is her race. She can't win the final but she will give a great sight.”

“Handy chaser returned to form with a strong 29.56 win here last week, with a clear passage he is capable of winning a race like this, however from the wide draw he is likely to be posted wide for most of the trip and his chances look limited.”
