2015 Group 1 National Sprint Championship – free tips & best odds

THE best sprinters from around Australia will converge on Wentworth Park this Saturday night with the running of the 1 Championship over 520 metres, but Christine Proctor is hopeful that her track specialist, Bessy Boo, can cause an upset victory for the home state.

Currently rated a $6.50 chance with William Hill, the son of Bekim Bale and My Black Bess caught punters by surprise in the NSW Sprint qualifier last Saturday, scoring a come-from-behind victory in 29.81 at double figure odds.

Drawn awkwardly in box six, the black chaser weaved his way through the field to score a determined victory over a gallant Jack Kade, much to the delight of Proctor.

“I didn't give him much chance off box six because there was a lot of pace in the race,” Proctor said.

“I went into it thinking our only hope was if the leaders bunched up at the first turn, which they did, and he miraculously flew into the first turn and managed to get into a good spot back in third.

“When he was running third the leader was still a fair way out in front, I thought he would run second which would still get him through to the final, but he took off in the home straight – he is a real surprise package.”

This Saturday Bessy Boo will face one of the toughest National Sprint finals ever assembled against the likes of dual winner Keybow (box three) and champion Victorian speedster Fernando Bale (box five).

Amazingly, the eight finalists have a combined total of 161 wins and over $1.9 million in prize money earnings – Bessy Boo has the most number of individual wins of the entire field, currently sitting on 27 throughout his career to date.

Proctor says that her backmarker will need a lot of luck to score a win in the $75,000-to-the-winner feature, but will be trying his absolute best.

“I am really happy with the box draw, but it will be pretty hard to beat dogs like Fernando Bale, he is the best dog in Australia,” Proctor said.

“It is a tough task, but if there is any trouble on the first turn then he will be there on the rail and I am sure he will run a good race.

“It has been an amazing thrill to train him and I just look at the dog in awe – he is a beautiful dog.

“I would be breathless if he won.”

The Group 1 National Sprint Championship is race eight at Wentworth Park and will jump at 9:55pm.

Lets check out the form of each runner, with tips and selections from Australian Racing Greyhound‘s tipster, Brad Bugeja.

Box One – Jack Kade
Black Dog – 32.6kg – November 2012
Collision x Neat Irish
Prize money: $59,876
Trainer: Anthony
Career: 61: 21-8-6
T/D: 31: 8-4-5
T/D Best: 30.00

“Has been racing in great style in recent weeks and from the red draw he should run a cheeky race again. There is quite a bit of speed drawn in the middle, but if he can step cleanly he should be able to settle in second or third spot early. He tends to produce his best when he can lead and dictate the terms, so he is definitely going to face an uphill battle tonight.”

Bekim Bale x My Black Bess
Prize money: $222,063

T/D Best: 29.58

“Represented NSW last year and he turned in a super effort when scoring here last week and earning himself another shot at the title. He is the ultimate professional and he has an amazing record over this trip. He is going to be giving away a big head start so I don't think he can actually win the race, but he does hit the line powerfully and I can easily see him running home into second or third spot.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $6.50 with William Hill

Box Three – Keybow
Black Dog – 31.3kg – December 2011
Take The Kitty x Key Exit
Prize money: $546,742
Trainer: Tony Brett
Career: 52: 25-8-6
T/D: 8: 3-1-0
T/D Best: 29.45

“He has been a star chaser for quite some time now and in recent times has scored some scintillating wins at Albion Park. Last week he trialled here and recorded an eye catching 29.63, and if he reproduces that type of effort he will definitely make the favourite work hard for victory. There is very little speed drawn directly underneath so he should be afforded all the breaks in the early stages.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $4.00 with William Hill

Box Four – Nero Bolt
Black Bitch – 33.0kg – January 2013
x Lochinvar Coco
Prize money: $67,265
Trainer: Nick Minutillo
Career: 34: 17-3-5
T/D: 0: 0-0-0
T/D Best: N/A

“Star WA speedster and he has really taken all before him in recent months. This is clearly his toughest test to date but if he can bring his Mandurah form here, he will definitely run an almighty race. The big concern with him tonight is that there is an abundance of speed drawn around him so he will need to do everything right in the first 50m.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $31 with William Hill

Box Five – Fernando Bale
White and Dark Brindle Dog – 29.9kg – March 2013
Kelsos Fusileer x Chloe Allen
Prize money: $798,110
Trainer:
Career: 33: 26-2-2
T/D: 10: 9-0-1
T/D Best: 29.27

“Champion sprinter and he really does look to be a good thing in this event. He raced like a tired chaser last time out at and with two weeks rest under his belt, I'm expecting him to fire out of the traps and he should blow away his rivals. He has won nine of 10 over this trip and the sectionals he has produced cannot be matched by any of his competitors, so if he does everything right at box rise he should be scoring.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $1.60 with William Hill

Box Six – Breaker's Tip
Black Dog – 30.7kg – October 2012
Mogambo x Dennes Point
Prize money: $50,180
Trainer: Gary Fahey
Career: 34: 19-6-4
T/D: 0: 0-0-0
T/D Best: N/A

“Tasmanian representative and he has built up an impressive record in his home state. After capturing the state final, he travelled here last week and trialled in a steady 30.22. Clearly that was his first look at the track and he will obviously improve , however I don't think he has the speed to cross and he must lead to win this event.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $41 with William Hill

Box Seven – Alex's Entity
Black and White Dog – 33.3kg – May 2012
Vee Man Vane x Girl Aloud
Prize money: $45,825
Trainer: Ben Rawlings
Career: 32: 14-6-4
T/D: 0: 0-0-0
T/D Best: N/A

“Former Victorian chaser and he has excelled since moving to SA. Two weeks ago he beat quite a good line-up when capturing the state final and he isn't without some hope in this event. He will have trouble crossing early but he should get a nice cart across from the six early and if he balances up in the first four, he could hold on for some minor money.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $21 with William Hill

Box Eight – Margins
Black Dog – 35.8kg – February 2013
Bekim Bale x Gogo Sutro
Prize money: $118,145
Trainer: Brooke Ennis
Career: 32: 12-7-3
T/D: 4: 0-1-1
T/D Best: 29.97

“Enormous effort to win the Victorian Final and the field he beat on that occasion was easily a lot stronger than what he meets tonight. The big concern in this race though is the wide draw – he tends to race best when he can find the rail early and get balances. From the pink he is likely to be posted wide for most of the journey and he will be forced to do it the hard way. Clearly he has the ability to run home into some minor money but I can't see him winning from the poor draw.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $13 with William Hill

1st Reserve – Tap Out Rose
Black Bitch – 26.5kg – January 2013
Cosmic Rumble x Sweet Fenoir
Prize money: $27,694
Trainer: Rodney Metselaar
Career: 28: 8-7-4
T/D: 15: 4-1-4
T/D Best: 29.85

“Has gone to the next level in recent weeks and if she happened to draw the red she could easily sneak into some minor money. Eye catching effort when placed here last week and she appears to be getting better with every run.”

Odds to win the National Sprint Championship: $21 with William Hill

2nd Reserve – La Grand Logie
Black Dog – 33.3kg – March 2013
x Oh Em Gee
Prize money: $52,848
Trainer: Jeffrey Eaton
Career: 35: 11-6-7
T/D: 18: 5-3-3
T/D Best: 29.73

“Fast beginner and he has the speed to give a cheeky sight, however he does fold up in the run home and he will be copping a lot of pressure from the outset in this event.”
