2016 Group 1 Harrison-Dawson – best odds & betting preview

EIGHT of Australia's best male sprinters will line up on Thursday night at Sandown Park to contest the Group 1 Harrison-Dawson (515m) on one of the biggest nights of racing in 2016 thus far.

The favourite to take out the $100,000 race is the all-conquering Blazin' Bomber. The son of Kinloch Brae and Absolute Stunna sits at $2.85 with Crownbet.com.au .

Drawn in box three, the black dog comes into the final in career-best form, winning five of his six starts since resuming from a spell. His only defeat coming in the final of the Group 1 Perth Cup at Cannington.

Amongst his recent victories are two at this very distance and track, including a scintillating 29.09 effort when taking out the Bill Collins Speed Star.

Second best in the market is Dalgetty at $3.60 for champion trainer . The black dog was far from disgraced when finishing second behind Blazin' Bomber in his heat off box eight and moves into box four for the final.

A winner of 16 of his 30 starts including the Group 1 Temlee, Dalgetty is capable of posting brilliant early sectionals and he will need to do precisely that on Thursday night with speed draw on his outside.

The majority of the speed is likely to be coming from Dalgetty's kennel mates, Invictus Rapid and Aston Bolero, which have drawn boxes seven and eight respectively.

Invictus Rapid produced the performance of his career in last week's heats, recording a two length win over One For Me in a blistering 29.20, while Aston Bolero reeled off the fastest early sectional (5.00) when finishing second behind powerhouse performer Dundee Osprey.

One For Me is given a chance at $6.50 with WIlliamHill.com.au after coming up with box one for the final. He is yet to start from the cherry throughout his 29 start career, but looks as if he will be suited along the fence. Can be hit and miss at box rise but has been improving his box manners of late and is capable of running fast times on the bunny.

There could be some value for punters with Tiggerlong Await which has flown under the radar heading into the final. The former WA chaser is now in the care of Terry Reid and has been impressive at his only two starts at Sandown, debuting with a 29.36 win off box one before running second behind Soda Man in his heat last week. Box five is no help but he is armed with good early speed and could put the pressure on a few of the dogs on his inside in search of the lead in the run to the first turn. Tiggerlong Await is currently paying $4.40 to place with Crownbet.com.au.

Soda Man displayed the best beginning of his career last week when scoring in 29.45 for young gun trainer Corey Grenfell, however he finds himself in box six surrounded by speed in the final on Thursday.

The field is rounded out by Dundee Osprey which showed what he is capable of last Thursday when overtaking superstar performers Zambora Brockie and Aston Bolero to score in 29.31, however he lacks early speed and is likely to find himself too far back against this lot.

The Group 1 Harrison Dawson is race eight on the card at Sundown Park this Thursday and is set to jump at 9:37pm AEST.
