2016 Group 1 Temlee – can Bravo get entry to an elite club?

DESPITE a short history, the Temlee is quickly becoming one of the most sought after trophies on the Australian greyhound racing calendar. First run in 2003 when taken out by Excite Ability, the invitation-only Temlee has been won by some of the sport's finest sprinters, with 2016 sure to be no exception.

Dalgetty is currently the $3.40 favourite with online bookmaker William Hill and comes into the race following an unlucky fourth in the Group 2 Shepparton Cup (450m). The son of Stagger and Rockin' Along is awkwardly drawn in box five but possesses brilliant early pace and will be looking to find the front in the run to the line on the first occasion.

Unlawful Entry has drawn the coveted rails alley for Kelly and Brett Bravo, with the brindle and white dog aiming to return some of his best form in the $100,000-to-the-winner feature. Last year's Group 1 Hobart Thousand winner has failed to salute at his last three starts, but punters have him on the second line of betting at $4.20 and are expecting a turnaround from the rails draw.

Co-trainer Kelly Bravo told Australian Racing Greyhound she is happy with the draw, a box from which Unlawful Entry is undefeated after four starts.

“I think the way the race has drawn the box may suit him – there isn't a lot of pace on his direct outside so hopefully he can punch up towards the front in the run to the first turn,” Bravo said.

“In saying that he is a bit of a hard dog to judge where he is most suited.

“Sometimes you think he is well suited by the pink and then he'll race on the fence, other times if he is on the fence and there is dogs in front of him he'll get off to try and get past them.

“It would just be nice if he could step on level terms with them and not give them too much of a head start otherwise he could find himself in a bit of trouble.”

In a wide open affair, Zambora Brockie is the next pick at $4.60 with Sportsbet, with the Anthony Azzopardi-trained dog aiming to bounce back from his last start sixth in the Group 1 Paws of Thunder (520m) at Wentworth Park. The son of and Flying Liddy was found to be injured after that run and has had roughly a month off the track, however if he can show his customary dazzling pace he will be right in the race from box four.

Fantastic Spiral is drawn beautifully in box two and is in brilliant form coming into the race as the winner of his past three including the Group 2 Launceston Cup (515m) which he took out on Monday evening. The NSW campaigner is undefeated from boxes one and two and should get every chance to find the front with two moderate beginners around him. The $9 available with William Hill seems a good price for a dog of his calibre from a gun draw.

Respect is also given to Above All ($8.50) and Shared Equity ($13) which are both high-quality chasers but haven't fared too well with the box draw in the six and seven respectively. Similarly Elfen Bale ($9), a litter sister to Fernando Bale, will have her work cut out for her from the pink.

Group 1 National Futurity winner Cash In Motion is the outsider of the field at $17. The daughter of Smooth Fancy and Teddy's Jackpot is blessed with tremendous ability but can be unreliable at box rise which is going to make things difficult in a race such as this.

The Group 1 Temlee is race eight at The Meadows on Saturday night and is set to jump at 9:42pm AEDT.
