Lochinvar Brogue revives memories of past ‘slow’ starters

WHEN the Robert Smith-trained brindle dog Lochinvar Brogue finally broke through for his maiden victory at his eighth race attempt, at on May 10, his previous form brought to mind a trio of greyhounds from the past who exhibited similar levels of frustrating consistency before finally breaking through for that elusive maiden success.

Lochinvar Brogue ( x Lochinvar Vogue) began his career by running second over 535m at on November 11, 2015. A week later he finished second over 520m at before running only seventh at Richmond, three days after that.

After a spell, Lochinvar Brogue resumed on March 9 with a second placing at Wentworth Park, followed by a third at the same course a week later. He was back again at Wentworth Park on April 6 and April 13 and, in both races, finished second.

So, after seven starts Lochinvar Brogue had five seconds and one third to his credit, with four seconds and one third from five Wentworth Park outings.

Lochinvar Brogue's efforts almost pale alongside those of Show The Light. A black and white bitch whelped in May 1998, Show The Light racked up no less than 10 starts, for 10 placings, before finally breaking her maiden.

Show The Light finished a one-length second at her first start, over 400m at on September 25, 1999, and then, successively, ran third, third, second, third, second, second, third, second and second at tracks as varied as , , Wyong and .

At start number 10, over 472m at Bulli on November 24, 1999, Show The Light finally passed the post at the head of the field. She then won her next two starts, both at Wauchope.

Back in 1979 a white and fawn bitch named Teentee commenced her career with no less than five successive second placings followed by a third. She commenced her career on January 10 by running second in a heat of the Bulli Classic and, despite being favourably drawn in box one for the final, she finished was second again. She then ran second in two maiden finals over 457m at and then was entered for the series, then run on the grass surface over 530m at Wentworth Park.

After overcoming box six to run her fifth successive second placing, she took her place in the final and ran a creditable third behind the highly-favoured Baretop Girl. Given a short break, Teentee returned to Wentworth Park on March 31 and finally broke through for her maiden success, at her seventh race start.

On November 8, 1952, a greyhound named Lighter scored at Newcastle at what was his sixth race start. His previous five races had resulted in four seconds, in all of them he was beaten only a head, and one third. His maiden victory was full of merit as Lighter was left badly at the start but weaved his way through the field and cruised to an easy win.

Editors Note: Lochinvar Brogue made it two on the trot on Tuesday night (May 17) when winning stylishly at Gosford in 30.34.
