96 Greyhounds Progress In 2012 Ladbrokes Irish Greyhound Derby Round 2
After an exciting opening round, 96 Greyhounds are poised to compete in Round 2, over 16 Heats, this Thursday 9th & Saturday 11th August.

Liam Dowling owned & trained, Ballymac Vic, continues to occupy the favourite position with sponsors Ladbrokes. 2010 Runner-Up, Tyrur Big Mike, and Ballymac Vic posted the fastest times in their respective heats on Thursday and Saturday, with Droopys Jet recording the fastest win of Wednesday night in 29.52.
The Ladbrokes Irish Greyhound Derby is the pinnacle of the Irish Greyhound Racing calendar, offering over €225,000 in Prizemoney including €120,000 & trophy to the winner. The event, run over 550yds in Shelbourne Park, celebrates it's 80th anniversary as a Classic Event.
The heats for the Ladbrokes Irish Greyhound Derby are as follows:
- Second round: Thursday 9th & Saturday 11th August
- Third round: Saturday 18th August
- Quarter- Finals: Saturday 25th August
- Semi- Finals: Saturday 1st September
- Ladbrokes Irish Greyhound Derby Final: Saturday 8th September

The Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) / Bord na gCon are responsible for the control and development of the greyhound industry in the Republic of Ireland. The Irish Greyhound Board has licensed a total of seventeen tracks in the Republic, of which nine are owned and controlled by the Board. The remainder are owned and operated by private enterprise. There are also a further three privately owned stadiums in Northern Ireland.
The greyhound industry in Ireland makes a very valuable contribution to rural economic and social life and as such is a sector that is deserving of attention, recognition and support. The industry employs just over 10,300 people directly and indirectly. The gross wage bill generated by this employment is estimated at €207 million per annum and the tax contribution from this employment is estimated at €21 million.
