Bell hoping for a krakka of a night at Dapto

KRAKKA'S brilliant 29.73 win in his semi-final of the 3 last Thursday night stunned race goers and punters who sent him to the boxes at $24.

Among those captivated by the victory was Krakka's trainer, Clifford Bell, who concedes he didn't know what to expect from the son of and Bush Slang at just his second start on the race track.

“I wasn't expecting him to go quite as good as he did in his semi because he is a young dog and it was only the third 500 of his life, so the time did surprise me a little bit,” Bell told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“With that being said I knew he could run because he had shown that in his trial before the series, but the lack of experience over the 500 was a concern.”

Having run second in his heat of the series behind Shadow Walker, Krakka began explosively from box seven last week, leading all the way to score by two and one quarter lengths over Elantris.

Bell is now hoping the black chaser can show the same dazzling speed in this week's $25,000 to the winner decider, having drawn the prized rails alley.

However, Krakka will face a solid field including 29.64 semi-final winner Berridale Boy (box four) as well as Elantris (box three) and Costin (box seven) who have both broken 30 throughout the series.

“The four (Berridale Boy) went a bit quicker than him in its heat, but they all have to do everything right because I think whoever is in front going around the first turn will just about win.

“If he had 20 starts going into the race you would have more of an idea about what he could do, but being such a young dog anything can happen.

“He has got to jump from box one, but if he can begin as well as last week then he should be right in it.”

Bell, who trains from his Yallah property with partner Bruna, said it would be an amazing thrill to land a win in the feature on Thursday night after devoting his life to the greyhound industry two decades ago.

“I was involved in the industry, but they got a bit expensive so I made the switch to greyhounds nearly 20 years ago.

“We have bred four litters and have won a few races at over the year's, but this would have to be the biggest race we have been in and it would mean a lot to win it because is our local track.

“We aren't big trainers but we put in the same amount of hard work, seven days a week so it would be nice to see him win.”

The Dapto Maiden is race six on the card at Dapto this Thursday night and is set to jump at 9:10pm.
