Sweet It Is Storms Home To Win 2014 Association Cup

(3) defeated a hot field to take out the 2014 One at on Saturday night with a soul stirring last-to-first effort that had to be seen to be believed.

The trained daughter of and Offspringer (Flying Penske – Skullring) had the large crowd on their feet as she sprouted wings over the concluding stages of the race to claim an upset victory along with the $75,000 first prize in the slick time of 41.78.

Sweet It Is left the boxes dead last and seemingly with an Everest to climb as the holder Xylia Allen (2) lobbed in front.

By the time they past the post the first time, Xylia Allen had began to open up a margin, while Sweet It Is sat back in seventh, the better part of 20 lengths from the leader.

Xylia Allen appeared as though she would make the race a one act affair as the field headed to the back, opening up a 10 length ascendency. Rocky Bale (5) found himself closer than ever and began to emerge from the pack, looming as the main danger to the leader as he sped to second.

As the field reached the 720 metre boxes where the race had began, it still looked as though it was a race-in-two with Rocky Bale slowly whittling away at Xylia Allen's lead.

It was at this point that Sweet It Is initiated a run that would embed her in greyhound racing folklore. In the twinkling of any eye, she went from a possible place hope to something that resembled a black, furry torpedo sporting a white rug who had just been launched from the most powerful artillery.

They entered the home straight with a tiring Xylia Allen trying desperately to stave of the challenge of Rocky Bale. But that battle was purely academic as Sweet It Is gave the pair of them a cold, whizzing past with a wing on every paw to score by three lengths. Rocky Bale snared second place, with Xylia Allen a further quarter of a length away in third.

Of the others, Lethal Three (1) began well and tried to match motors with Xylia Allen early, finding herself in second. She found interference in the catching pen and struggled from that point. Dyna Willow (4) was away mid-field and was unable to make any ground on the leaders. She found herself well back before making some ground late to finish fourth.

Hailstorm Billy (6) raced handily early in third place before he too found trouble in the catching pen which ended his hopes. Hala Belle (7) found herself well back early and was never really in the hunt, finishing fifth, a long way from the winner. Infinite Wish (8) was seventh away and struck trouble as she looked to move forward early which did nothing for her chances, eventually finishing sixth.

The win was Sweet It Is' eighth from 31 career outings and she looks to be racing as well as ever. The victory also sees her total prizemoney earnings surpass the $130,000 mark.
