Vegas Bound set to dazzle in Group 2 Ipswich Auction series

VEGAS Bound looms as one of the major contenders for this year's Group 2 Ipswich Auction series (520m) following on from her last to first heat victory last weekend.

The daughter of Head Bound and Tina's Show stumbled when leaving the boxes and was a clear last past the post on the first occasion. From there the white and black bitch began weaving her way through the field, looming wide on the home turn and storming past her rivals to score by one and three quarter lengths in 31.09 on a rain affected track.

Trainer said he was pleased with the performance, with the bog track playing into the of the versatile bitch.

“I was very happy with her run,” Apap told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“She tends to give them a bit of a start, but there is not much we can do about that.

“I was actually pleased it was a heavy track because I knew that was going to suit her – the heavier the better – she is very strong.”

The win gave Vegas Bound seven wins from 24 starts with 14 minor placings, with Apap satisfied quietly confident going into this Saturday's semi-final. The 29 kilogram chaser has drawn box eight in her qualifier and will need to finish in the top four to make it through to next week's $40,000 to the winner feature.

“If she couldn't have the one I would have wanted her in the eight as her style of racing at the moment is to want to go around them,” Apap said.

“Even if she misses it from box eight she should still get the chance to hunt up and circle around them so I am quite happy with the box.

Apap said he wouldn't be surprised to see Vegas Bound settle a bit closer this week, with the bitch racing with plenty of confidence after a recent stint over the middle distance.

“She was able to settle in the 600m races without getting any interference which gave her a bit of confidence not getting bashed around,” he said.

“She has been giving them a fair start – but she can jumps when she wants to as well.

“I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see her jump from box eight and see her racing prominent early – if she can she will be very hard to beat – but its racing and you can never tell what is going to happen.”

Apap, who owns and runs The A Team greyhound stud, has never won the Auction series, but believes Vegas Bound will give him a genuine chance this year.

“We are pleased with the way she is going, everything is good so we have our fingers crossed,” he said.

“She has definitely got a motor and she is very consistent – she has hardly been out of a place throughout her whole career.

“It would be nice to see her draw towards the inside if she makes the final – she has drawn the one at Ipswich once before and she went 30.39.”
