Sportsbet offer market for racing’s next million dollar dog

HAVE we seen the next greyhound which can achieve the remarkable feat of breaking the $1 million prize money barrier?

Sportsbet.com.au have recently released a market on which greyhound will be the next to join superstars Fernando Bale, and in the seven figure club, with Snakebite Bale the peculiar favourite at $15.

The son of David Bale and Crystin Bale, a younger half-brother to Dyna Double One, has raced on 21 occasions resulting in eight wins and 11 minor placings, with $43,412 in the bank thus far. While his future appears bright on the track, $15 is a little short for us to be talking about a greyhound which needs to earn $956,588 before we see a collect.

The greyhound closest to attaining the $1 million minimum is 's Space Star which has a massive $453,900 to his name. The son of Bekim Bale and Tonto Tears loomed as one of the best stayers the country was last seen 12 months ago and probably would have gone close to breaking the barrier already if he hadn't been struck down by injury. $301 is a massive price compared to some of the others in the market which have far less cash to their names, however it is a risk as to whether, as a rising four year old, we will ever even see him on the track again let alone as a winner.

No Donuts is probably one of the better bets, with the son of Fabregas and Chevy Prince currently at $61. The Anthony Azzopardi-trained dog has $296,352 in career earnings at this stage, however he could add an additional $75,000 if he gains a start in the Association Cup at Wentworth Park, for which he is second reserve. Even if he fails to get a run, No Donuts is probably the best distance chaser going around at the moment, having already secured two group 1 races, and with a serious lack of depth among the staying ranks, he could quite easily make a clean sweep of the major distance features in coming months.

Moreira, at $51, could prove to be one of the interesting bets, with the Jason Thompson-prepared chaser drawing box one in Saturday's Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park. Already a 14 time race winner, a victory would elevate his career earnings above $368,000, making him one of the closest to achieving the feat.

Shared Equity ($61), Dalgetty ($51) and ($26) are all chasers with over $200,000 to their names, meaning they are each one fifth of the way to breaking the million dollar barrier, however Shared Equity and Dalgetty are both essentially three years old, while Unlawful Entry is very unreliable early making the chances of him earning nearly another $800,000 highly unlikely.

Above All is at $81 for Rob Britton, but, even as the winner of over $320,000 already, it is hard to see him achieving the $1 million mark, with the son of Magic Sprite and Kara Janx set to celebrate his fourth birthday in July.

There could be some sense in backing some of the young guns on the scene, with Major Jackpot ($51) and Buck Forty ($71) both set to contest the $150,000-to-the-winner Launching Pad at Sandown Park this Thursday night. Both appear to have a stack of ability, but punters will have to be pretty confident they have enough to reach the dizzying heights of the three stars in the million dollar club.

Another interesting pup in the market is Kensa, owned by Race A Chaser Syndications. The daughter of Spring Gun and Little Bit Fancy is $301, having only had two starts (for two wins), however she is nominated for the $100,000 Riches Race series in May which could see her get 10 per cent of the way towards a payout if she is triumphant.
