Ned’s Pedro Impressive Bendigo Goldrush Debut Winner

and got an instant return on their investment when Bushfire Benefit auction greyhound Ned's Pedro streeted his rivals on debut at yesterday.

Trained by , Ned's Pedro was successfully auctioned last Saturday night at a special gala fundraiser dinner at Crown Palladium for the Kinglake community.

Dennis and Tina were the successful bidders and despite the pair forming one of Australia's most formidable greyhound training partnerships, they were happy to leave the greyhound in McDonald's capable hands.

That decision reaped instant benefit yesterday when the son of Where's Pedro ~ Somerton Lass streaked from box eight and lead at every post to win running away in the best of the day, 23.78.

Ned's Pedro ran sectional splits of 6.50 (best of day 6.41) and 12.52 (best) before cruising to a 12 length victory.

While the $750 first prizemoney is a long way short of the $14,500 Dennis and Tinan paid for a half shar in the greyhond, Ned's Pedro indicated he has a bright future by being only one of two greyhounds yesterday to break the magical 24 second barrier at Bendigo. The other was the trained (Vapour Whirl ~ Thanks Blue).

Darren McDonald demonstrated his dominance in yesterday's Rocky Ridge Farm Heats with a winning treble. His other winners were Arapiles (Where's Pedro ~ Sue Jane) 24.43, and Ned's Pedro's litter sister One More Ruby (Where's Pedro ~ Somerton Lass) 24.18, giving him three runners to move forward to next Wednesday's Rocky Ridge Farm Goldrush Maiden Semi Finals.

But is wasn't all beer and for McDonald yesterday as the fourth greyhound he took to yesterday's heats Haydee Ray, a litter brother to the other sub 24 second winner Thanks To You; broke down on the first corner when racing clear in the lead and finished tailed off. Subsequent veterinary inspection revealed a dropped msucle, whcih in all likelihood will be career ending.

The Bendigo Rocky Ridge Farm Goldrush Maiden Heats continue today with another twelve heats before Wednesday's Semi Finals leading to the $10,000 to the winner final on Sunday 12th April 2009.
