Wakebi Rode Well Drawn For Ballarat Final…..Or is that Wakebi Rose?

“He's a mad railer who is well drawn and capable of taking out the final.”

That's the assessment of the chances of by his trainer Geoff Bumpstead for the Lion Quality Products Grade 5 Final at Ballarat on Wednesday night.

Bumpstead has only had Wakebi Rode in his kennel for six weeks, but the talented chaser has already made an impact on local tracks.

The former West Australian bred chaser had lost all confidence on circle tracks in that state, so his part owner and breeder Graham Berry sent him to race in Victoria.

Wakebi Rode's only two runs in Victoria have produced a second at , and a very impressive heat win to qualify for the 450 metre final.

The son of sat behind the race leader last week and produced a powerful finish to go on and win by 2.25 lengths on the line.

On that night Greyhound caused a major bungle when Wakebi Rode was nowhere to be found in , but the greyhound had “morphed” in to Wakebi Rose. Avid punters would've been thrown in to chaos and conspiracy theories abounded.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) blamed the mix up on an administrative error. The greyhound's name was inadvertently changed to “Wakebi Rose” from the time the greyhound last competed at Warrnambool on the 18th February 2009 to the greyhound being nominated for the Ballarat meeting on 25th February 2009. As a result, the greyhound “Wakebi Rode” raced as “Wakebi Rose”.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) investigated the matter and are satisfied that the correct greyhound was presented for racing at Ballarat on 25th February, 2009 and have amended GRV records accordingly.

“He's the perfect box dog who just keeps improving with each run.” Bumpstead said.

“I expect him to provide a forward showing from his favorable check (box 2) draw. Hopefully he can run on like he did last week and win the final.

Hardest for Wakebi Rode to beat in the final will be New Model and .

New Model from the Darrell Saunders kennel made it three straight wins last week when he ran down Complexified in the straight.

New Model has drawn Box 8 in the final. The box draw will not affect the chances of the offspring as he has plenty of pace out of the boxes.

Wes Mantooth for Anakie trainer will also have his admirers as he has been racing consistently of late.

In last weeks heat win he led from start to finish from Box 7, but has drawn awkwardly in Box 4 in tonight's final.

Meanwhile, there will also be five heats of the Hoppers Crossing Security Grade 5 on the twelve race program.

One to watch in heat five will be evergreen chaser Mick's Intent.

Mick's Intent, who is rising four years of age, has been in arguably the best form of his distinguished career over the last twelve months.

With a victory at Warrnambool, and two recent seconds at Ballarat he is sure to be in the finish from his Box 4 draw.

The Peter Crawley trained chaser is a good beginner from the boxes, and it would surprise to see him notch up victory number twenty.
