As a constituent of your electorate I urge you to support an immediate review into the closure of the greyhound racing industry in New South Wales and the ACT. The participants in the industry were not consulted during the Special Commission of Inquiry. The NSW Premier Mike Baird also ignored a key point of the recommendations made by Inquiry Chair Michael McHugh, which was to discuss in parliament whether the industry should be shut down. Several of the main points of contention are the fabricated figures in the Special Commission of Inquiry, the lack of consultation with key industry bodies, a lack of compassion shown to participants in the industry and the fact many are being punished for the actions of few. There are over 13,000 participants in the industry in New South Wales and many more employed indirectly, such as vets, track workers, equipment supplies and farmers, who supply feed. Greyhound racing is an incredibly important part of the economy, particularly in often struggling rural areas. These people, without their primary source of employment, are going to struggle to feed kids, pay bills and lead the lives they currently do. A one off payment from the government is not going to help for long. The fact of the matter is only 10 people out of 13000 have been charged with live baiting, while the report estimated 10-20% of participants were involved in this practice, but where is the proof? If the figure is this high why haven’t more people been charged? The ramifications of this decision are not just being felt in New South Wales, with many industry participants fearing for the sports future in other states. They are wondering if the plug will be pulled on their livelihood without proper consultation. As a united voice all we are asking for is a fair go, not to become victims of self-serving politicians.
